We had so much fun these last couple of weeks! From miniature cars and humans battling lego people to giant sisters trapping toy-sized brothers, your humor really shined through all the Camp CrunchLabs week 2 submissions. We absolutely loved every single one of your Forced Perspective Optical Illusions, and we're thrilled to congratulate our winners* in this week’s livestream.

Summer vacation won’t last forever, so grab your buddies because it’s time for the next week of camp and this one’s all about pranks.

Introducing Challenge #4:

We can't wrap up the optical illusion challenge without issuing you another! This week, we want to see the best prank you can create.

Remember to be kind to your friends, family, pets, nature, and everything else in the world while you embark on your challenge. Think about it: the best prank is like a surprise party - everyone is happy that you pulled it off. A good prank does not hurt anyone and brings joy to everyone involved.

One of the best things about thinking like an engineer is stepping your prank game up! Imagine the sophistication you can build in your pranks with all the new skills you have at your disposal.

  • Get creative and think up something no one has ever done before!

  • Design as many cool features and trigger mechanisms as you can!

  • Take your pranks to the next level with science!

We're all about using STEM for pranks here at the lab. For example, our mirror bank uses the science of mirrors to hide a spider inside the box, giving unsuspecting friends a hilarious surprise. Or consider the wet bandit prank, where water flow tricks make the water squirt back at the shooter instead of the intended target!

The Prank Master, Mark Rober

With the recent launch of our
Hack Pack, we have robotics and coding on the brain! With all the technology we have today, we can create new machines that don’t use plastics, and use coding to make things digital rather than generating more single-use products which end up in the trash, or polluting the ocean.

Go ahead, you’ve got our permission to get lost in a daydream for a moment– imagine the perfect environmentally friendly robot.

  • What if there was a robot that turns plastic into gold?

  • Could an algorithm reduce contamination to improve composting?

  • Can we automate sorting trash from recycling?

All it takes is a good, creative idea and a little help to implement it to change the world around you.

#TeamSeas saw a problem – an estimated 11 millions tons of plastic entering the ocean every year. So Mark Rober and MrBeast teamed up to dream up a solution.

This challenge is definitely one near and dear to Mark, given that he's somewhat of a prankster himself, a master you could say. Over the years, Mark has pulled off some legendary pranks. In the spirit of the week's Super Challenge* we've put together a list of some of the best Mark Rober pranks on YouTube:

Remote control shopping cart

Isn’t it annoying when people don’t return their shopping cart at the grocery store? With a remote controlled shopping cart, Mark makes the abandoned carts follow anyone who don't return it to the corral.

Teach movie theater texters a lesson

And who could forget the time Mark dropped popcorn on movie theater texters?

April Fool’s Day pranks with Jimmy Kimmel

Mark has also teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel for several April Fool's Day pranks featured on Jimmy's channel over the years. This video is one of our favorites, but you can watch them all and decide for yourself!

The Infamous Glitterbomb

Of course, we can't talk about Mark's pranks without mentioning the infamous Glitterbomb that delivers a glittery surprise to unsuspecting package thieves. It's a masterclass in prank engineering, combining motion detection, GPS tracking, and a relentless barrage of glitter.

The Peeled watermelon: A summer favorite

In the spirit of the season, let’s take a closer look at one of Mark’s most summer-y prank ideas, the peeled watermelon prank.

First, you’ve got to find two watermelons that are roughly the same size and shape. With the help of an adult, carefully cut off the green rind with short, shallow slices until you have just a bit of white rind left. Then, find a kitchen scrubber and use it like sand paper to remove the white remnants of rind until you have a giant, red egg.

With the other melon, scoop out the yummy fruit (save it for eating later!) and hide the red egg inside the hollowed out rind shell. It’s quite the unexpected trick – see how you can hide your modifications to everyday things around you and surprise your family.

Ready to prank? Parents can head over to the entry form to enter this week’s contest*. Remember, the goal is to make people smile and laugh. So, as you prepare your pranks for this week's challenge, keep it fun and friendly. We hope you're inspired by Mark's pranks and can't wait to see what mischief you create.

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Contest begins at 9:00 a.m. PT on 6/1/24 & ends 11:59 p.m. PT on 8/13/24; but, to be eligible to win Grand Prize, one must enter by 11:59 p.m. PT on 7/30/24. Open to legal residents of the 50 U.S. & D.C., who are 18+ and the parent or legal guardian of at least (1) child between 8-16 years of age. Grand Prize winner must travel 8/16/24-8/18/24. See Official Rules for full details including entry periods, entry requirements, prize descriptions and judging criteria. Void where prohibited.

let the summer fun begin!

This week, we’re exploring the fascinating world of forced perspective! Your challenge for Week 2 of summer camp is to create a forced perspective illusion that really wows us. Can you make your tallest friend look shorter than your shortest friend? Can you make your cat look taller than you? Get creative with placing objects closer and farther away to shoot a video using forced perspective that's got us doing double takes of disbelief. Use angles and distance to create optical illusions, making objects appear larger, smaller, closer, or farther away than they really are.

There will be four winners for each of the summer's six super challenges. Challenge winners will receive a challenge prize pack: a signed patch, a signed backpack, and a signed Phat Gus.

Then, from those winners, Mark will choose the grand prize winner who will be invited to the real-life CrunchLab and star in the 12th and final video with Mark Rober himself.

Happy pranking, and good luck!
