Time flies when you’re Thinking Like an Engineer! Summertime is so full of promise - free time, fun activities, and fun. But all good things do come to an end, and we’ve been having such a fun time at Camp with you! We’re looking at the very last week of camp and while we’re sad to say goodbye, it’s been an incredible adventure filled with exciting engineering challenges.

Let’s recap the highlights!

Camp is many things: super fun summer activities, Thinking Like an Engineer, cool videos, and the challenges of course. But to the Camp CrunchLabs counselors, the camp challenge submissions* really standout, showing the true meaning behind Camp CrunchLabs.

This week, in honor of our upcoming final challenge, we're taking a look at all the fun we've had with each Super Challenge!

Science, but Even More Fun!

Camp CrunchLabs has been a super fun journey of creativity, innovation, and engineering fun! Each week, campers tackled exciting challenges designed to stretch their imagination and skills.

As we approach the final challenge, let's recap the science and engineering activities aka Super Challenges we've conquered so far, before issuing that last challenge of the summer!

As always, be sure to check out our YouTube channel at 8am PT on Saturday to watch this week’s livestream and see the winners* of the Rube Goldberg challenge.

We’ve got a ton of fun and games planned, and another poll where you can vote on which bucket will be dumped on Mark’s head!

A Super retrospective

A Rube Goldberg machine is a chain reaction. Usually, it’s an overly complex device designed to perform a very simple task giving the whole system a touch of whimsy that can only be explained by it’s namesake.

Wow, we received literally thousands of Camp CrunchLabs Contest* entries this year! Each one was different and has truly inspired the CrunchLabs team. Not only do your challenge submissions show excellent science and engineering learnings, they also demonstrate good humor, the prankster ethos, and intelligence put to good use!

Here’s a summary of the challenges of camp! Did you submit something for each one?

  1. Make a Toilet Paper Laser Maze
Create a three-dimensional laser maze using toilet paper in your hallway. Test your agility by crossing without breaking the beams.

  1. Use Optical Illusions
Experiment with forced perspective optical illusions to create videos that make objects and people appear larger or smaller than they actually are. Check out one of our favorite examples in the video below!

Challenge #6:

Your final and most challenging challenge* of Camp CrunchLabs is to record a clip and then reverse it to make a fun video your fellow campers will enjoy.

Can you defy the laws of gravity, like making a video where you convince us you’ve made water flow up? Pull together every last engineering skill you’ve gained this summer to record and reverse a video that will make your fellow campers wonder how you did that. Showcase your sense of fun and harness those creative skills to make us laugh. The sky's the limit: edit your video so that whatever magic trick, prank, or gravity defying moment is happening, it is happening backwards for maximum reverse effect.

Some apps that might help you create your challenge video are:

iMovie - download the free app to edit videos on Mac and iPhone

Capcut - sign up for free, edit videos on browsers & compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS

Reverse Video - download the free app and edit videos on iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Clipchamp - online video editing tool for Windows

Remember, parents and guardians should always monitor their children’s online activity for safety, and this is no different! Kids should be sure to have a parent’s supervision or permission to visit these sites, and parents, please keep an eye out!

Ready to get started? Parents and guardians can head over to the entry page to share their family's video with us once it’s done!

Winners* will receive a signed patch, a signed backpack, and a signed Phat Gus. The best entry of the summer gets an exclusive visit to the lab*! Have fun and let your creativity shine.

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Contest begins at 9:00 a.m. PT on 6/1/24 & ends 11:59 p.m. PT on 8/13/24; but, to be eligible to win Grand Prize, one must enter by 11:59 p.m. PT on 7/30/24. Open to legal residents of the 50 U.S. & D.C., who are 18+ and the parent or legal guardian of at least (1) child between 8-16 years of age. Grand Prize winner must travel 8/16/24-8/18/24. See Official Rules for full details including entry periods, entry requirements, prize descriptions and judging criteria. Void where prohibited.

let the summer fun begin!

This week, we’re exploring the fascinating world of forced perspective! Your challenge for Week 2 of summer camp is to create a forced perspective illusion that really wows us. Can you make your tallest friend look shorter than your shortest friend? Can you make your cat look taller than you? Get creative with placing objects closer and farther away to shoot a video using forced perspective that's got us doing double takes of disbelief. Use angles and distance to create optical illusions, making objects appear larger, smaller, closer, or farther away than they really are.

There will be four winners for each of the summer's six super challenges. Challenge winners will receive a challenge prize pack: a signed patch, a signed backpack, and a signed Phat Gus.

Then, from those winners, Mark will choose the grand prize winner who will be invited to the real-life CrunchLab and star in the 12th and final video with Mark Rober himself.

Ready to participate? Head over to campcrunchlabs.com/challenges to submit your creation.

Stay tuned for the final weeks of Camp CrunchLabs coming up soon. We'll put all our skills to the ultimate test! Keep building, creating, and having fun!
